We opened with two adjacent buildings in September 2021. In 2024 we have added three containers, and a roofed outdoor area between the containers, to establish an engineering workshop, storage of goods for sale, and general storage, and extra workspace for our growing membership. We take part in the monthly Omokoroa Market at the Settlers Hall, with goods on display for sale. Our sheds are well equipped and supported thanks to grants and donations from TECT (Tauranga Energy Consumers Trust), Bay Trust, The Centre Omokoroa, the Acorn Foundation, The Lion Foundation, and many other businesses and individuals.
The Shed is actively involved in the local community. Two examples are a relationship with Omokoroa Number 1 Primary School, where year 7 students attend the shed and make sports equipment for the school to use; such as pickle ball bats, and corn bag games – and the construction of Omokoroa’s Bird Observatory Educational Facility in conjunction with other volunteer groups and organisations. This comprises two observatories being built at the water’s edge, and a prominent Godwit inspired bird sculpture erected near the access-way. While the facility is designed to cater for educational purposes, the larger Cooney Observatory will be able to accommodate larger student numbers, special interest groups and the like. The location is the striking wetland environment around Cooney Reserve; highly regarded as home to more than 50 species of birds, including many threatened species. The project is directed and managed by a shed member.
