History

Originally we were located in the now-demolished Chinese Mission building in Frederick Street in the city. The Shed was quiescent for a few years until we became re-established in Haitaitai, and our regular numbers are growing. We understand that our closest shed (Wellington City Menzshed in Newtown) also traces its root to the Frederick Street premises.

Funding

Our rent and incidental expenses are met by charitable donations canvassed for by one of our founders, John Gibbons, and fellow supporters.

Location

MenzShed Wellington is at the northwest corner of the bowling green at The Haitaitai Centre. Originally it was the greenkeeper’s shed and has a wonderful outlook with great sun.

Opening Times

We meet 10am – 1pm each Wednesday and occasionally at other times.

How To Join Us

Typically, 8-12 turn up each week from a pool of about 20. We do not have a formal membership or charge a membership fee. We have colleagues from across Poneke / Wellington with a wide range of skills. New attendees are asked to commit to our Health and Safety protocol before using equipment in the shed. Morning tea and natter are an essential part of every day we are open.

Supporting Our Community

As for many MenzShed’s, we have plenty of requests for assistance from the community – particularly because of our closeness to the Haitaitai Community House, Playgroup, Plunket nurse, community garden and The Haitaitai Centre (ex-Bowling Club). For some years, a specialty has been making rat-trap boxes for Predator-Free Wellington. Hundreds have been made.
